Vaginal prolapse is due to a weakness of the pelvic floor, which leads to the organs surrounding the vaginal to bulge into the vaginal. Vaginal Prolapse is named after the tissue or organ that protrudes into the vaginal.
In front of the vagina lies the bladder ,and when the bladder protrudes into the vaginal is called a “cystocoele”. Behind the vagina lies the rectum .When the rectum bulges into the vagina ,this is called “rectocoele”. Prolapse of the small bowel into the vaginal is called “enteroceole”.
Protrusion of the uterus into the vagina is called “uterine prolapse”. Protrusion of the top of the vagina into the vagina in a woman who has had the uterus removed is called “vault prolapse”.
The pessary sits in the vaginal and pushes the prolapse organs away up in the vagina. Most pessary can be left in place during sexual intercourse.
